What is Global Warming?
Global Warming is the increase in temperature on the earth's surface that has occurred over the past two hundred years, beginning with the industrial revolution. While estimates for the increase in temperature differ between agencies, governments and other experts. The well respected international body, the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change concluded that there has been a 0.74 degree celsius or 1.33 degree fahrenheit increase in the earth's surface temperature over the past 100 years.
The increase in temperatures caused by global warming will have a myriad of affects. It is difficult to determine exactly how these changes will affect our planet, but some generally agreed outcomes are higher sea levels, which could result in countries such as the Maldives and it's 350,000 inhabitants, being under water. Other likely effects include the loss of large parts of the arctic and it's habitat for polar bears, changes in agriculture production due to rainfall and temperature changes and species extinction.
While there has been political and public debate for many years over what to do to slow and then reverse the affects of climate change, most experts agree that much more needs to be done. Most countries in the world have ratified the Kyoto protocol and high hopes are now on teh next international meeting in Copenhagen. At Enough CO2 we believe that small actions we take as individuals will reduce our own CO2 emissions and encourage governments of the public will to do more.
If you would like to submit your own ideas on how to incentivise the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, please let us know and we will publish your ideas and seek feedback from our members.
