Low Energy Bulbs

Low Energy Bulbs are known by many names. They can be called compact fluorescent lights, CFL lights, GE lights, an ecobulb and by many other names. They are a type of fluorescent lamp used for general purpose lighting. These types of lights are designed to replace conventional bulbs, also known as incandescent bulbs, and fit into existing light fixtures around your home.

So what are the differences between an ecobulb and traditional light bulbs, what should we consider when looking at CFL lights and are they worth purchasing?

While the actual length of time a light bulb will last for, depends on many factors, including watts, faults and the length of time the light is kept on. An energy efficient CFL bulb will on average, last for 8 to 15 times as long as a conventional bulb. With both types of bulbs you can increase the lifespan of the bulb by not switching lights off and on as often. The US Energy Star program recommends that users leave their lights on for at least 15 minutes at a time to lengthen the lifespan of their bulbs.

Low Energy Bulbs bulbs consume less electricity. A typical CFL bulb uses 60% to 80% less electricity compared to conventional light bulbs and that means lower energy bills. The cost saving through lower energy consumption means the average American can expect to save $30 per light bulb purchased, over its average 5 year lifespan.

When multiplied by the number of lights in the average American house, of 16 to 20, this equates to a saving of between $480 and $600 over five years through lower electricity bills and fewer purchases of replacement bulbs

Are there any pitfalls to avoid when purchasing Low Energy Bulbs?

CFL lamps cost an average of 3 to 4 times more than older style lights, though this higher purchase price is regained with interest when you consider that the average life of a CFL is between 8 and 15 times that of a conventional one. A CFL produces varying shades of white light, this light is measured by a system called 'correlated color temperature' or CCT and is measured in kelvin. To obtain the same warm and soft light favoured by most home owners, select a bulb that emits in the 2,700 to 3,000 kelvin range.

There are many CFL or Low Energy Bulbs available, I prefer these bulbs from Sylvania the most. They provide a warm and pleasant light, more like a traditional incandescent color.

Since using these I feel good about saving a lot of money and using less electricity. They fit readily into standard lamp sockets and turn on quickly, get yours today.
